…With a Step to the Left and a Flick to the Right

A Poem by Dancer Delight – just before taking the stage

Dancing children, dancing lights
May you dance your dance tonight
May our intermingled souls
Sigh like young and tender foals

Moving on the floor, now, babes
You’re birds of paradise
Cherry ice cream smiles
I suppose it’s very nice

When the hour this eve grows wee
And Paper Tiger has set us free
We’ll rock the house with Dancer Delight
With a step to the left and a flick to the right

Happy Spring? Ha! I know that we all wish for just one day without having to bundle, so hopefully it’s coming. But we’re celebrating anyway – PISCES!! Celebrating one of our favorite Pisces pals Stephanie Morgan’s birthday …… will include a rare & special dance set from DJ Dancer Delight. Last seen at the Paper Tiger / Archrivals show in January, she is making serious dance waves – and rumor has it she’s hot with the Archrival……just saying. Not to be missed!!

Doors: 9pm – pocket-friendly $5

10pm – dj Jon Alterman

11pm – Paper Tiger

12am – Dancer Delight

Dancer Delight:

Dancer Delight is here for you. When she DJ’s, she spins only the most dance-tastic tunes on her state-of-the-art Apple computer. She will make all of your dancing dreams come true. She wants only for you to remember to breathe. Dancer is the sister of Chuck Lichtenberger (jazz musician extraordinaire, keyboardist/co-mastermind of Stephaniesid, and manager of esteemed “rock out with your jock out” pop band The Archrivals). Dancer also shakes a tambourine and sings backup for The Archrivals, providing spiritual guidance for the band.

Paper Tiger:

In the beginning, there was a jazz singer who met a DJ/producer. They shared a mutual love of Radiohead and collaborated on their own cover version of “Fake Plastic Trees”. Although both MINGLE (one half of a duo) and RubySlippers (one third of a trio) were working with other projects, they felt a spark in their new creation and began to write and record their own material. Downtempo electronic trip hop, the live show includes live visuals by neb.Cinema, drummer Dave Mathes of Sonmi Suite and Chuck Lichtenberger of Stephanie’s id and CLC on melodica …. quick like ninjas & yet with excellent manners. Because we’re itching for Spring. We hope that you’re well, we hope that you will come out & boogie …… until then, take good care and take some time to hear the music!

Paper Tiger presents new jazzy, electronic vibe

Paper Tiger presents new jazzy, electronic vibe

By Lindsay Nash

Paper Tiger’s music is jazzy, swanky, electronic and sophisticated, a rare blend that makes for the perfect soundtrack to a drive or night on the town.

On Friday, that eclectic sound will be featured at the Hookah Bar in Asheville for an evening of music and live visuals.

The electronic trip-hop duo formerly known as RubySlippers with MINGLE have come together to create a new sound and new band. They expect to release their new album, “Me Have Fun,” in February.

“We started collaborating eight or nine years ago,” said Molly Kummerle. “We did a cover on a Radiohead song and started writing together. And it finally occurred to us that we should pay more attention to this and make it our full-time deal.”

The duo is made of Kummerle and Isaac Gottfried, a DJ and producer of MINGLE, of Asheville.

For the fans of RubySlipper, Kummerle describes the new sound as “a less bit less rock ‘n’ roll.”

“I feel like it’s still very simple and has a jazzy flavor, but it’s fuller,” she said. “It’s not flashy. It’s kind of got this lazy sophistication to it that I really love but it’s also still really playful and fun.”

The new name, Kummerle explained, explains a lot about what their music is about.

“The songs are about life, the strangeness of it, the toughness of it, but also the delicacy and tenderness of it,” she said.

Gottfried, the other half of the duo, explains the new sound as a lot of different genres rolled into one.

“It’s hip-hop beats with sort of a jazzy, funky, loungy, sountracky feel behind it,” he said. “And there are little bits of worldliness. You’ll hear little Asian and Indian touches.”

Paper Tiger was featured in POPAsheville 2008 as well as the Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival and showcased at the MOOG Foundation CD release party at The Orange Peel. The duo’s song “Folded Laundry” is featured on Lunch Video Magazine.

Friend and fellow musician Stepanie Morgan, of stephanies?d, said the new music is most congruent to what’s inside Kummerle.  “She has had more creative control on this one than ever before,” Morgan said. “It’s the most

Paper Tiger with The Melanaster Band – 12/11 Smart Bets

Hello All,

Amid snow(?), wind storms, rain and power outages, we’ve been preparing for our last show of 2009.  This has certainly been an exciting year, to say the very least, and we are thrilled to be ending it on this note of celebration.  We are on the final mixes of the album and looking into mastering options as well as pouring over graphic design ideas.  Our brains are on overload, but we’re thrilled about where we are and what we’re creating!

This Friday, December 12 @ the Hookah Bar, Paper Tiger and The Melanaster Band (live stage project of Marley Carroll) – doors open at 9:00 pm with an economically friendly $8 cover.  We will be joined on live visuals by Ben Mason of neb.Cinema, with a few tricks up his sleeve, since recently being heavily involved with the Design & Technology lounge at HATCHfest-Asheville and TEDxAsheville. We are also thrilled to have the very talented Dave Mathes of improv electronic band Sonmi Suite playing live drums.

Check out our spot in this week’s Mountain XPress

See below for some info about the Melanaster Band as well, we are honored and thrilled to be sharing the stage with them!

It’s been a long year, we hope you’re all hanging in there.  We’re ready to get our groove on and kiss this little year farewell, we hope you’ll join us.

Till then, as always, take good care, and take some time to hear the music.

Marley Carroll’s 2007 debut album Melanaster, is the result of meticulous bedroom alchemy by a prodigious multi-intrumentalist. It sounds like a lost Radiohead LP submerged in ten feet of salt water. Described by NPR as “Gorgeously subdued glitch pop”, Melanaster is a collection of melancholy pop songs tethered to abstract electronic rhythms, ie – early-Nineties shoegaze rock meets rhythmic IDM experimentalism. Carroll assembled The Melanaster Band to take these songs to the stage. The group came together serendipitously in Asheville, NC – five accomplished musicians with backgrounds that couldn’t be more different. Billy Cardine, Barrett Smith, Ryan Lassiter and Jake Wolf are versed well versed in genres crossing from bluegrass to jazz. At the helm is Carroll, an award-winning scratch DJ, electronic musician and multi-instrumentalist. These disparate influences merge to create a beautifully layered sound that evokes My Morning Jacket, Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie, with an earthy touch of Americana. The live presence of The Melanaster Band is a gift to music fans everywhere.

Tonight in Asheville

Tonight is a big night for electronic music in Asheville. In fact, this weekend is a big weekend for electronic music!

Live and direct from San Francisco CA, Bassnectar will be taking the stage tonight at the Orange Peel in front of a capacity crowd – not the first time he has sold out the Orange Peel. Bassnectar has made quite a name for himself in the Asheville area, and so much so that his Orange Peel show now warrants an official afterparty! The site of that afterparty will be at Club 828 …

Bonobo (aka Simon Green) will make his debut performance in the Asheville area when he spins a late-night DJ set at Club 828, after the conclusion of the Bassnectar show. Quite an accomplished musician and DJ in his own right, the UK-based Bonobo’s 2006 release, Days to Come, was awarded album of the year honors on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide (BBC). Simon Green has now released the first single from his yet to be titled, forthcoming album – the new single “The Keeper” featuring Andreya Triana (video: Having been recording in Barcelona, San Francisco, and Hackney, Bonobo will now crisscross The United States rocking DJ sets in advance of his new release (on Ninja Tunes) – Friday night’s stop being in Asheville.

Also featured at the “Official Bassnectar Afterparty”:

* Chicago-based DJ trio Orchard Lounge who has several times visited the Asheville area – most recently while spinning a late night set at the 09-09-09 Trinumeral festival. While we have worked with them previously, this crew’s popularity is growing exponentially!

* Asheville’s down-tempo, trip-hop duo Paper Tiger, who was also featured at the Trinumeral festival. Paper Tiger is about to release their debut album – the feature single, “Me Have Fun,” now has a video available for your viewing (video:
Tonight joined by nebCinema on live visuals!

* DJ Mingle, who is truly one of our favorite DJs in Asheville area and who stylistically pairs with Bonobo as good as any. Mingle is quite the unassuming master of his trade, with three full-length albums already released!

* VJ Megan McKissack who will handle visuals throughout most of the evening and is becoming a regular at our events.

As always, we request that all those coming to Club 828 conduct themselves in a socially acceptable manner, treating the club patrons and employees with the utmost respect – the same way they will treat you.

The event schedule is as follows: (subject to change)

1000-1130 Mingle
1130-1200 Paper Tiger
1200-0200 Orchard Lounge
0200-0400 Bonobo (DJ set)

At present, tickets remain at Honeypot and Parlour AKA Hunk Clothing (downtown), and at Harvest Records (west-side). Tickets are now $15. The after-party tickets will be for sale at the Bassnectar merchandise booth inside of the Orange Peel, and at the door of Club 828 after 10pm. If your ticket is purchased at the Bassnectar show, you will receive a $1 discount. WE RECOMMEND PURCHASING YOUR TICKETS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE TO ENSURE YOU’RE NOT LOCKED OUT OF THE PARTY!

* Please note alcohol sales will end at 2am.
